Beijing – An Image About to Change, 2008
The Photographs were taken in the spring of 2007 in the ancient traditional quarters of Beijing called hutongs.
The Panoramic photographs, built up of iconic objects from various neighbourhoods that were recorded and worked on to form an open, allegorical picture of the street and its residents.
This series enable Varda Carmeli to display an image of ancient scenes and lifestyles that have survived up to the present day a moment before the change has occurred.
Virtual Reality, 2007
Varda Carmeli uses the camera lens to document the image of objects and their reflected aspects by the constrictive boundaries of the frame and the optical viewer of the camera. The images might be a distortion of the sensual perception or, possibly, its duplication. The viewer proceeds within a reality that is actual or virtual, existing or non-existing. By this means the photographs enables the viewers to conduct a hypothetical discussion with regard to what they see and to the source of their visual perceptions.
A Scenic Journey, 2007
The photographs were taken while travelling in Germany by car for an entire day in the period between autumn and winter. These are monochromatic photographs of landscapes with varying degrees of colourfulness of light and dark that create a feeling of beauty on the one hand and on the other hand of struggle and emotion, a pastoral antithesis both threatening and charged that redefines the relationship in general and the pictorial in particular between the object and the subject. Travelling while looking ahead emphasizes the helplessness of photographing images from the past.
This series invites the viewer to be involved and challenges to confront the issue of remembrance.
