Foreword

Introduction
Jean-Luc VIRARD ( BOUN est son prénom d'origine) was born on December 22, 1965, in Vientiane (Laos) . He grew up in Vientiane and move to Paris in 1973, he still lives and works here – unless he is working or travelling abroad, for example on the American continent, in Caribbean Sea, in China.
His artistic life as a painter could be characterized as continuous departure. At the same time, it shows different versions of an impulsive escape, as he had to escape his parental home as a young man.
After leaving school he took up proper arts education in Paris, though it would never have a formative influence on his way of working and his style. But how could a man of such a character bear dependency and categorization?
His strong colorful compositions take the opposite direction of abstraction. He does not abstract from something to something “new”, he rather creates something new in complete freedom so as to speak in the second view discovers in his paintings new realities, vistas, spheres and spaces, shadows and blazes.
The structure of Boun's painting is abundant, with in-depth conception, full of profundity and liveliness; the emotion uncovered from his painting is complicated but change is orderly; the contrast of color employed in his works, such as black and red, is both uplifting and depressing, it’s about the uncertainty. Furthermore, the mystery is filled with metaphor, expanding till expression is almost unbearable, then sloping under an elegantly soft melody...
In Boun’s paintings there is a lot of experience and background, while his paintings neither offer comfortable, nor security. For the curious eye, there’s a lot to discover. The artistic style and gestures – they are unmistakable powerful, impetuous and eventful – in the field of association, powerful, on the threshold of abstraction. His visual experiences turn into objects. The observer aims for insight beyond internalized conceptions of beauty. This is when love for the composition arises.
Boun’s work does not lead us to compare.
We shall not need to ask the artist, as Boun is the one – and nobody else.

Colorful paint’s Realm
The colorful oil painting of Boun is of an intensely liberate idiosyncrasy, his creative state almost reaches to a kind of frenzy from the soul. It is essentially a self narration of the soul, a natural revelation of his heart. With his painting brush, extrinsic substance seems to be withered by disassemble, restructured, concrete and visible image, substituting it for the vivid color mixed into painter's heart. He exposes his life to others, with his natural character full of abundant spirit, which is in tranquility yet without any fervency, while sometimes it is accompanied with a mysterious wilderness. It reflects a free, leisurely, sometimes bewildering shadow, and to him, art is a route accessible to freedom of soul.
Boun has been pursuing such a colorful oil paint realm in both his life and art, and his colorful-oil paint world is pure and transparent. Boun creates an abundant and self-spiritual new realm by his unique colorful system as he is basically in a deep tradition, while his traditional skills associates with the colorful exploration fraught with modernity. The sense of times he creates is obviously appeared, and the colorful mixture between block and flat is like an expressive factor full of modern abstract meaning, seeming like a metaphor to the times.
Boun’s work can be divided into two categories, which one is traditional theme, pursuing the quietly tranquility and classic passion, which another is his colorful creation, pouring out his own tales. His colorful oil paint world is full of meticulous fascination, integrating the color with oil paint, with the surface of picture massy yet no lacks of clarity, providing for a strong abstract factor. Boun’s creation is incline to free, random and occasional too, in comparison with traditional paintings as to its determined characteristics, his colorful oil painting is close to an undetermined occasional vividness, forming an intense tension, visually exciting, while the introspection and tranquility of the traditional painting are weakened, substituting it with modern, conceptive, abstract and structured beauty. That is the true beauty emanating the strength of life’s vitality.
Infusing the life’s ideology into the painting, enabling the painting to avoid mechanic copying and deadly forming, making the art return to its own nature, it forms the artistic melody of Boun’s painting by his artistic fervency and alcoholic idiosyncrasy. Through this point of view, I feel that painting is just a media that Boun tries to convey his life, and it has more widely view behind the painting, which is the profundity of life’s liberation.

Article about Boun’s sketch
A blank canvas is empty and lonesome, while a pencil walks around on it freely; every point and every line wind up unconsciously a vivid, lively world with life. Gazing at these dimly appeared pictures, the noise, song, struggle, cry, softness and moisture of the world appear out spiritually, and the single relationship between paper and pencil becomes attractive fascination, which Boun is particularly fond of.
Material world seems to build up a special kinship with Boun, and he can always finds the most appropriate words for interpretation when dialogue with Nature.
Boun drinks wine sometimes, and often drinks enjoyably; but he never falls down, however the more he drinks, the brighter his eyes are; and his words are almost up to sky. It is probably the real abstraction of his life’s revelation.
As a result, his abstract sketch is full of the smell of wine in nature, while the leisurely calm appearance always reflects a kind of wisdom, which might be the spiritual expression right after communicating with God. Actually, the pencil held on his hands seemingly possesses a free will, creating a miracle on the white canvas in liberation. Each point and line are drawn leisurely, dimly appeared; but occludes a closely structured relationship within, literally layer by layer while incessantly extending an imaginative space for the spectator. It is the colorful world flashed by the material world. Let us peacefully enjoy each point and each line of Boun’s sketch draft.

The cultural attaché to the Chinese embassy in France
Boun firmly believes
That abstraction does not mean anything at all.
He is convinced
That in the abstract field of modern oil painting
Substantial training in the basic academic techniques
Of traditional oil painting skills are indispensable.
So in his abstract series,
One can feel the dynamic vitality of youth,
And exquisite details reveal a profound maturity.
