Statement
My name is Orsolya Cowell-Lehoczky and I was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1972.
I was about 16 years old when I began to take (visual) art seriously, and attended my first drawing/art courses. Later on curiosity drove me to study professional photography. I attended the University of Fine Arts in Budapest between 1993 and 1998, in 2000 I received a Master's degree after studiing two more years at the same Institute. My main subject was silkscreen printing, but I also studied art history, painting techniques, all kinds of graphic arts, as well as graphic design. During my university years I turned from pure monochrome towards the use of colours in my prints.
After my master's degree, I chose oil painting as my preferred medium. I like to play with big shapes of colour in my pictures finding this an important part of the composition.
As I have never been able to abandon my earlier interest in the more graphical approach, line drawing still has an important role in my work. I never really wanted to choose between being figurative or abstract.
I moved to Bucharest, Romania in 2001. Since then, I have been on the move with my family. We lived in Greece, and then in the UK, with two short breaks in Thebes, Egypt. There I did drawings and studies for one of the Hungarian excavations run by ELTE University, Budapest. In the spring 2007 my family and me moved to Switzerland where now I am to re-establish myself as an artist once again
The ever-changing environment had a great impact on my life and my way of looking at things. Although my pictures usually involve close ups of my surrounding environment, they often carry quite a different and symbolic meaning (or feeling) that occurred to me during the process of painting. I hope to give some depth to my virtual snapshots. A touch of surrealistic attitude, a story to tell. However, I don't wish to express or describe serious thoughts. On the contrary, I believe that art should be enjoyable, even if it carries something that might have great importance, at least to me.
My latest works are heavily built on / influenced by my daughter's drawings. I have seen things in them, and after some composing I came up with a three-piece-a-set painting as the first of my new works.
